Lake Stevens American Legion team wins state tournament

The Lake Stevens Vikings won the Junior A American Legion state baseball tournament last week with an 8-5 victory over Franklin Pierce in the title game in Spokane.

The Vikings posted a 4-1 record in the five-day tournament.

In the championship contest, Brandon Fiske drove in three runs and stole home for Lake Stevens.

The Vikings broke a 3-3 tie with a pair of runs in the fourth inning. Alex Bowman delivered a run-scoring single and Justin Bell drove in the second run with a suicide-squeeze bunt. Lake Stevens never trailed the rest of the way.

Pitcher Denium Reynolds earned the win, his second victory of the tournament.

Other members of the team included Christian Shouman, Duke Dolphin, Gunner Eklund, Kevin Lanto, Keanu Puha, Matt Sweeney, Kyle Kaintz and Danny Esquivel.

The team was managed by Cary Fiske and coached by Tim Kaintz and Tyler Fiske.

Softball

Express win title: The Snohomish County Express fastpitch softball team concluded its 2008 season on Aug. 3 by winning the ASA 14B Western Nationals in Salem, Ore.

The tournament drew 48 teams from Washington, Montana, Hawaii, California, Arizona, Oregon, Nevada and Colorado.

The Express came through the losers bracket to win the championship. After losing to Vista Blue from Southern California, the Express won five straight games to earn a rematch in the finals. Needing to win twice to claim the title, the Express swept Vista Blue 13-2 and 15-5.

The Express finished the season with an 83-12-2 record.

Members of the team included Holly Hawkins, Lauren Kesterson, Jessica Christensen, Chloe Kesterson, Haley Fritz, Dallas Nelson, Brooke Taylor, Kristen Musgrove, Abbey Facey, Lexie Levin and Monica Clow.

The team was managed by Rick Fritz. His coaches were Rick Clow and Matt Kesterson.

Football

Wolverines place second: The Marysville Wolverines arena football team placed second last month at the 16-team Arena Youth National Championship Tournament in Dallas.

The Wolverines, a team made up of 12- and 13-year-olds from Marysville, Lakewood and Camano Island, played four games in two days. The first two games were played in Texas Stadium, home of the NFL's Dallas Cowboys, The final two games were played at Valley Ranch, the Cowboys' training facility.

Marysville won its first two games -- 12-8 over the Dallas Falcons and 34-0 over Arlington, Texas -- to advance to the championship game.

In the title contest, Marysville fell to North Texas 19-14.

Members of the Marysville team included Jacoby Kummerfeldt, Dylan Delarosa, Cole Duncan, Cameran Wheeler, Taner Husby, Brett Heichel, Josh Robinson, Nic Trout, Hans Vanderwel, Jake McDougall, Austin Gianetto, Cody Stone, Shawn Larsen, Alex Larsen, Justin Peterson, Tanner Wright, Tanner Murry, Dylan Hanson, Elijah Muhammad, Jordan Hoorn and Anthony White.

The team was coached by Dan White, Brian Hoorn, Ryan Trout and Lee White.

Archery

Roop takes second: Ben Roop, 16, of Monroe, placed second in the Cadet Recurve division Sunday at the 2008 Junior World Target Trials in Colorado Springs, Colo.

After four days of competition from various distances, the top eight archers in the division advanced to the shootout, where they shot at targets from a distance of 60 meters. Roop finished second in the shootout.

By finishing among the top three in his division, Roop qualified for the Junior World Target Championships that will be held in October in Antalya, Turkey.
