Reader poll: Should the WIAA add lacrosse as a sanctioned sport?

Posted at 4:24 pm by Mike Cane, Herald Writer

Lacrosse isn't a sanctioned high school sport in this state but it's certainly growing in popularity.

Players on the local high-school-age club teams are highly successful, and Everett, of course, landed the pro Washington Stealth of the National Lacrosse League. In case you don't already know, the Stealth play home games at Comcast Arena.

But will lacrosse ever become a sanctioned high school sport in Washington? When?

Once again, lacrosse is on the list of proposed amendments that will be considered by the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association Representative Assembly. In fact, there are two lacrosse-related proposals: one to add the sport for girls at the middle and high school levels, and another to add it for boys among the same age groups.

The 2010 Representative Assembly will vote on the lacrosse proposals (and 10 other measures; here are more detailed explanations) when it meets in late April.

What do you think about adding lacrosse to the official list of this state's high school sports? Be sure to share your reasoning in our COMMENTS section.

Please add my support to the growing legions of lax players and fans who believe that it should become a boys and girls varsity sport in Washington State.

I don't think this is a question of if the WIAA sanctions lacrosse, but when. Lacrosse is the nation's fastest growing sport and Washington is one of the fastest growing regions in the country. There are a number of fantastic lacrosse programs in the state already, with many more on the rise.

    Re: WA HS Lacrosse
I can see the benefits of state sanctioning but I can also see some downside to it as well. But I think that Mr. Kennett is right in that it is not a question of "whether" but rather "when".

Adding lacrosse is a great idea. It's a good way to get kids more active.

Hey Ryan - thanks for posting your thoughts about this.
Have you ever played lacrosse? How would you describe the interest in lacrosse in your community?

    Re: lacrosse
LAX is growing FAST in Washington, and especially in the Puget Sound region. The new Everett Club (Silver Lake) as well as the growing success of clubs like Mukilteo... combine it with the early success of the Stealth and the select Walax/Starz programs... lots of positive things. It is a great sport to watch, and even better for kids to play (high action/activity, lots of scoring, etc.)
